Greetings! I see this question all over the internet. The digital age with software and computers gives everyone an opportunity to take photos like never before.
I am going to assume that you aspire to open your own business in this post. If you are looking for a job in photography, keep in mind there are very few studios who hire extra staff photographers. To be a photographer, you'll need to be ready to open a business.
- Work for another photographer! If someone is willing to take you under their wing and teach you, this is a great way to learn the practical side of business and photography. However, keep in mind that it also makes you the competition. If you decide to go this route offer to sign a non-compete agreement. You will have a better chance of working for them. Or offer to pay for them for the knowledge.
- Photography schools. There are a few good schools. In Florida there is the Dayton School of Photography. Pensacola State College and Art Institutes and Brooks School
- Hard Rocks method. Just go for it. If you feel confident enough that you can use your camera and sell the images, then run on down to the local clerk of court to obtain a sales tax ID and business licenses.
From a "real" world perspective keep in mind that 50% of all startups fail in the first two years. Just because it's now digital files instead of negatives does not mean there are no cost involved. Advertising, websites, cameras, maintenance, software, gas, accounting. business cards, brochures, professional memberships... etc... all cost money. If you want to start a photo business plan to set aside at least 25K to 45K., just to get started. Don't quit your day job just yet. However, if you have the drive to seceded and you are ok with losing that money if it doesn't work out... then go for it. It is a very rewarding career!
Good Luck! Tricia
